NOTE: Reproduced with permission of the Syndics of Cambridge University Library and William Huxley Darwin. Engelmann. T. W. 1876. Sur le développement et la multiplication des infusoires. Archives de Zoologie Expérimentale 5: XXXIII-XXXVIII.

See Cross and self fertilisation 2d ed., p. 412: "Engelmann concludes that the conjugation of various Infusoria, whether permanent or temporary (in this latter case called by him copulation) does not lead to the development of true ova, but to the reorganisation or rejuvenescence of the individual. There seems to be a close analogy in such a result with that which follows from the union of the male and female elements of distinct plants, for the seedlings thus raised may be said to show regeneration or rejuvenescence in their greatly increased constitutional vigour."

Archives de Zool. Exper. Tom V. 1876 No 3 p. XXXIII. good abstract on Engelmann on Conjugation — His rejuvenescence does not not differ essentially from my view of use of ordinary sexual reproduction.—
