John Horwood (1823-c.1880) was the head gardener of Darwin's neighbour G.H. Turnbull. 1862-63 Horwood superintended the building of Darwin's hothouse. Darwin acknowledged his assistance in Orchids, p. 158.

June 15th 62. Mr Horwood brought me fly stuck of stigma & rostellum of Cattleya mossiæ & I found another – perished most firmly glued – but not strong enough to have removed – pollinia apparently same Fly with long proboscis which I saw visiting O. maculate & inserting proboscis into nectary.
