[130]

Catasetum, [illeg] Aug. 31. 1876. All petals & sepals dirty-greenish, spotted with purple Labellum, with central portion yellowish & raised into an elongated projection, concave on lower side - the basal part of labellum forms a wide nectary (The near end of projection in front of column not closed or bi lobed.) & in this respect differs much from the other species, but this nectary apparently does not contain nectar. (All used)- it serves, however, to hold the terminal portion of one of the antennae, the other is turned inwards & with its tip bent at ∠ to remainder & pressed against the column & is probably [illeg] . I can hardy doubt the bees gnaw the basal part of the elongated yellowish projection, it overhangs the nectary & in doing so touch the one sensitive antenna. Over other parts essentially as in C. saccatum. The so-called nectary probably [illeg] to cavity in middle of L. of other species. Antenna much elongated.

[in margin:] (Upper sepal & petal form hood & guide.)

Stream of water 62°F no effect on antenna; but all flower insensible.

(Alter the name of species examined.) It is the saccatum type.
