June 7th 62. A Catasetum (5) sent me from Kew, with all sepals & petal green reflexed (except labellum) & spotted minutely with green. Labellum uppermost all green, smooth on distal edge, with its wings entirely enclosing column leaving the other petal & sepals outside leaving small entrance into the great ball-like cavity of Labellum - Two long antennae [illeg] & parallel & apart, both up curved & guard base of labellum. Stigmatic chamber large. Pollinium hinged - very adhesive disc largely developed filament of column & anther short - Rostellum very protuberant - Ovarium short extremely well furrowed. Stigmatic chamber with a much thicker layer of slightly viscid matter, than I have ever seen in other Catasetums.

One spec. was monstrous had 2 anthers 2 rostellum & 2 pollinia - but only 2 antennae with middle of stigmatic chamber prominent.
[97]
Species clearly allied to tridentatum. The stigmatic surface does not seem nearly viscid enough to break caudicle; viscid matter consists, when fresh, of millions of glass-like utriculi & some not many, small beads of viscid matter.
The ovules extend only a short way down ovarium - Present, when fresh, same doubtful appearance as before ie I think but am not at all sure that I can make out rectangularly bent projecting nucleus.
Utriculi after 24° in Spirits, with nucleus but little more distinct, & with very thin [2 words illeg]; but looks very transparent. Ovules long gut-formed, formed of cells, each with large nucleus, but with no pulpy contents within: I cannot see any distinct projecting nucleus. The

Evidence leans pretty strongly that this is exclusively male, but the female organs in the one [specimen] examined rather less atrophied.
