C. L. Brehm Handbuch der Naturgeschichte aller Vögel Deutschlands (1831) In table at end I see there are 282 Birds in Germany, the species being taken according to all other authors, but Brehm adds 576 [+] 282 [=] 858 other species named by himself ie more than double the previous number. No one supposes that he intentionally falsifies nature & he is evidently most industrious. He observed birds & collected himself. He asserts that his fine species, which generally seem to inhabit different stations are paired together, & he finds the same variety in successive years. He collected (Introduct p. His fine species often have different songs & manners - In migratory Birds (p. XXII) asserts that his fine species come from different countries. He divides some very conspicuous birds into fine species, as Grouse, Goatsucker.
