Travels in Peru by Dr. J. von Tschudi (translated by T. ross)

p. 142. horses of Peru mostly natural amblers of; of which there are several varieties. The paso llano is very smooth – trotting horses cannot be taught it – though such easily acquire the paso portante, which is very rapid, with rocking movement – fore & hind feet / same side being reined simultaneously, it is the pace of the giraffe – the paso portante natural & trotting horses can easily be taught it.
