Lettuce. var. Grt. London Cos Lactuca sativa

Two plants growing close together; one was covered & the other allowed to cross freely with another one other? uncovered plant. But season very bad & insects not much about & few seeds produced. —

Seeds planted viz lots in same glass Oct 19' 4° 30' P.m. & on Oct 20th at 9° P.m. one real lot germinated on 21st— about equal numbers & many germinated in both lots —

(Dec. 1st no difference in any Sand lot) all dying. — In pot, perhaps crossed finest.) (Feb. 10th in sand equal) & in Pot, now fine plants quite equal.)

(March 21. equal) (June 3d. sometime ago, both turned out of Pot, & put in K. G. Crossed now look finest.)

(June 30. The supposed crossed Plants nearly flowering two tallest 27 & 25 inch

Two tallest self- plants 21 1/2 & 20 inches)

see back for see number of seeds of these as supposed crossed & self plants.

These seeds put on damps sand Oct 5. 1867 & will form plants of 2d generation. —

Lettuce of 2d Generation.

Seeds after germination were planted on opposite sides of 2 Pots & now Dec. 30 67/, they are to tips of leaves 5 inches high; & quite equal on opposite sides of Pots.

(April 3d. 68 still no difference on 2 sides of either Pot)

(June 5 /68 The crossed rather lowest but flowered one day before the self-plant.)

(June 14th 1868. — The Plants in Pot. 2 were turned out of Pot. (earth not broken) & placed in open ground; but they were sadly injured by change; & now have made flower stems, but not yet in flower.
