Verbascum lychnitis. These plants were raised from self-fertilised flowers— & were themselves now in second first generation of self-fertilise covered by a net.

6 fl. fertilised by same flower pollen— 6 by other plant of same parentage & 6 by wild plant growing at High Elms— Four pods of each kind were produced— Also plant produced plenty of self-fertilised & spont: pods but not so many as the uncovered plants. — Seeds of all 4 sorts placed of 4 capsules of placed in watch glasses, & seemed not much different in number. —

But the 4 by own flower pollen weighed 0.61 gr

4 by distinct plant of same parentage weighed 0.64

& 4 by wild plant, seemed clearly finer seed & weighed 0 88.

Planted in large flower pot on Oct. & placed in greenhouse

The Pot I was placed out of doors, but plants have not thrown up flowering stems. The self-fert. plants look finest (see back)

(Nov. 18 '1867 Pot. 2. & 3, were sown on opposite sides with same seed as before; on one side self-fertilised, & on other crossed seed, that from wild plant & from distinct plant of same parentage mingled together. —)

In Pot. 2. one crossed plant & has not flowered. In Pot 3 one self plant has flowered & is about a yard high)

Aug. 5 1869. Some seeds were sown from self-plants again self-fert. & from crossed plants uncovered, which were probably again crossed by bees. — The crossed plants came up much thicker & only 3 in row of selfs; so that these grew much better, here—
