June 30' Crossed plants have no advantage

1867 June 30th

Lupinus pilosus (blue) only 1 crossed plant has survived; in same pot 2 self-fertilised; these were turned out of Pot, (bottom unbroken) & placed in open ground — so no hardly any struggle. There are two other self-fert plants growing near by themselves.

June 30' Crossed plant 17 3/4 inches high

tallest self-fert Plant 20 1/2

second tallest 19

third — 17 3/4

fourth rather shorter. —

Oct 18th The crossed plant 38 inches high, & much finer & more branched than the 4 other self-plants, & produced many more pods — The 2 tallest self plants are 32 & 33 inches high. — The two self-plants in same pot, close to with the crossed, died early, starved to death in summer, & were unable to mature their a single pods;— this remarkable as whole bottom of pot broken away —

Lupinus pilosus. 1867.

The one crossed plant was crossed by pollen from distinct plant (but this was necessarily a self-fert plant) & two pods contained 3 & 2 seed.

The self-fert. plants again spont produced under net many pods: 16 pods contained on average 2.25 seed with max. of do 3.

The plants from these seed will form plants of 2d generation.

(May 17' 1868 The crossed seeds were not well ripened & several rotted & in Pot. I, two of the crossed seeds after germinating died, so that now only a pair left in pot.)

(June 21. 1868 the crossed flowered first, 27 inches to tip of flower-stem the self-plant, 21 1/2 inches high)

(Aug 24. Same plant after regrowth. Crossed. 33 inches — self 26 1/2 inches)

(The crossed plant spont. fert, uncovered in greenhouse produced 8 pods with 22 seeds average 2.77. seed.

The self Plant produced only 2 pods with 5 seed, average 2.50 — seed. —
