Vol. I. p 258. quotes Carpenter Human Physiology p. 809 — the Corpora Wolffiana in embryos of mammlia & Birds are Homolog. with kidneys of fishes, & they act as kidneys till after birth — (see Owen act at first & then become rudimentary, as if part of skin or grale of caterpillar were retained.—
