"Notes on the Stridulation of some New England Orthoptera"

Proc. Boston Soc. of Nat. Hist. Vol XI April 1868 by Dr. Scudder — He could make the insects by rubbing on file with quill answer him. This must be rivalry as ♀s do not stridulate

The Acrydii which stridulate by their femora make a less shrill note than other families.

Scudder, Samuel Hubbard. 1868. Notes on the stridulation of some New England Orthoptera. Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History 11: 306-313. [Darwin Pamphlet Collection 449] PDF Darwin cited this in Descent 1: 353.
