Darwin cited this in Descent 2: 29: "as the keeper in the Zoological Gardens shewed me, can instantly be distinguished from the female by having more lurid yellow about its whole body."

Rattle-snake the Keeper is positive & knows sexes by copulation & eggs, that in all the many he has seen the female is far blacker with hardly any yellow & the male with much yellow
