Bartram's Travel. p 128 - Says the male alligators strive to win females by splashing, & roaring in centre of the lagoons & swelling ready to burst his head & tail lifted up & twisting round & round – "like Indian Chief rehearsing his feats of war" – "swollen to an extent ready to burst, his head & tail lifted up, he spins or twirls round on the surface of water"
