Partial translation of the letter from Giovanni Canestrini to Darwin, 8 April 1868. The editors of the Correspondence were apparently unware of this as it is not cited with the published letter. Emilio Cornalia (1824-1882) was an Italian naturalist and zoologist.

I must now add induced by the observations of one of our best bacologs, Prof. Cornalia that when a lot match of silkworms is healthy, the resulting males & females approach uncommonly near to equality.
This equality was particularly observed when the brood was examined in freedom.
In breeding in the House & in sickness, the males are in

excess — Differs from my last letter & against general experience of best breeders — but Cornalia good observer.—
