Inheritance by age
Oct 1 1869 - 2 of the 4 Ducks have now acquired the splendid tail feathers, so that there are certainly acquired after the speculum: but the speculum is apparently rather indistinct in young ♀s - (N.B it is also, as [Blyth] says less bright in adult ♀)
Oct 6 1869. I have now looked at ♂ & ♀. (Both nearly black vars) & it is certain that ♀ has nearly as good sp. as ♂
