a good article by Miss Cobbe - worth reading about morals. I think the social instinct as it leads to action is nearer truth than the organised result of experience of utility on the brain - though no doubt the social instinct has been developed through its utility. The mere experience of utility wd not by itself urge to action. But read article. I think [cause] of social instinct, if it reasoned about it the actions of others cd have idea of justice - ie of things which other of same community ought to do for it, as a member of the community

It is probably not pleasure which leads a small bird to face the ocean - or cost the labour so sedulously or attack ones enemy of any size &c.
