Ch 9

Aug 11./55/

Hollyocks

Castrated 4 flowers, single, of dull purple very dark toward centre

In a bud xx just showing petels, I find by pulling off anthers some pollen shed, which perhaps wd be effective & which adhered to closed stigma In flowers just going to expand & just expanded, enormous quantity of pollen; stigma entirely hidden, yet I fd it impossible with brush quite to clean the stigma & I fancied in one case the pollen — taken were entering the stigma: probably [illeg], but if so quite account for not – crossing

Aug 13 saw several Hive Bees come from other Hollyocks covered with pollen; & crawlling all around the stigma no doubt fertilise it, at least pollen dropped off on petels

Aug 18th Put pollen of slightly double lemon-yellow on 2 flowers of above & again on 19th.— Marked flowers with dark blue washed white & red worsted.—

The flowers series if castrated are marked by red worsted: the 2 upper ones best for I cut away an adjoining [tiny] plant.

[1v]

Oct. 15. of the 4 first flowers castrated & left to be fertilised by insects, twho shanked off; 3d found set very small head of seed, marked A in seed drawer, perhaps not I think good.— (N.B no other flower were left on same plant, nearest plant about 5 ft off)

This [white were dugg was reversed].

The 4th flower formed a small head of seed

Unfortunately I have mingled the 2 upper & 2 lower heads, yet we shall see whether crossed alive

The 2 upper heads of good size
