That worms should be are able to distinguish between the day & the night when it seems at first surprising, for they are furnished with [no]t eyes, nor do they seem to possess any diffused sensitiveness to light as in the care of many lowly developed organisms; for I have repeatedly placed a candle close to them when out of their burrows at night, & though then very timid they never took the least notice of the sudden light. No doubt they could readily distinguish between the dry, warm air

Sometimes, however, they behave nor were they affected when the light was abrubtly admitted & shut off. Sometimes,  however, they behaved very differently, for as soon as the were stimulated, light feel on them they behaved very differently, for as soon as the sun stimulated light fell on them, they irritating withdrew into their burrows with almost instantaneous rapidity. This occurred only occasionally in  perhaps one time out of in perhaps once in a dozen or score of trials times trials. When they did not withdraw instantly, they often
