July 15 1856. Lawn mowed once or twice in spring, & then left unmown 4X5 3x4 feet square
(Conditions must have been long the same)
2 Trisetum flavescens— germinated well
3 Lilium perenne well commonest. germinated fully
4 Cynosurus cristatus well germinated

(1) Anthoxanthum odratum in flower. No doubt existed last year

June 1— 1857. Poa & Tresetum very abundant Ranunculus & Dandelion vigorous.— By careful examination I f one 1/2 dead leaf of Clover & Achillæa— not one daisy— 1/2 dead Cerastium, which all utterly died soon (Bears a cropping by cattle in Pampas.) All the grasses were present & extremely vigorous— so that luxuriant growth has killed nine species of plants.
May 30 1858) Ranunculus Dandelion & Grasses. Small bare patches had appeared in spring & on them I noted many seedlings coming up, but by this time all had perished: thus confirming my experiment of sowing seeds.
Trisetum, Poa, Lolium predominant Holcus increased.— Buttercup & Dandelion very vigorous—
