Thanks to Brian Rosen who explained that the note and specimens were prepared "perhaps to accompany his presentation of his subsidence theory of coral reef formation in a paper read to the Geological Society of London on May 31, 1837. The NHM acquired the specimens not long afterwards in December 1842, and subsequently placed them on display in the former Coral Gallery, from which they were removed to collection storage in the 1970s."
