RECORD: Darwin, C. R. 1838-1840. Library borrowing ledger. RRAuction7Dec.2022Lot1095. Edited by John van Wyhe (Darwin Online, http://darwin-online.org.uk/)

REVISION HISTORY: Transcribed by Christine Chua and edited by John van Wyhe 11.2022. RN3

NOTE: See record in the Darwin Online manuscript catalogue, enter its Identifier here. From the auction description: 12.5 x 8.25. Provenance: from the estate of Carl Levin.

Deletions are not recorded here as almost every word has been deleted, usually indicating the return of a book, and the image of the manuscript is provided rendering such recording unnecessary.

From the names and works recorded, it is possible that this records borrowing from the library of the Royal Geographical Society. See Darwin to the Librarian of the Royal Geographical Society [19 March 1839] in Correspondence vol. 2: "Mr Darwin would be much obliged to the Librarian of the Geographical Society to send him Lutke's charts of the Caroline Isld, & likewise any charts of the Lagoon Isl. in the Pacific by Beechey, which the Society may possess.—" Jan C. Turner, Deputy Librarian of the Royal Geographical Society informs us that no extant loan books from the Society are known

The ledger could also come from The Geological Society of London. Caroline Lam, Archivist & Records Manager of the The Geological Society, helpfully reported that the Society no longer retains its registers from the period except for "a microfilm of one of the Museum loans registers which is now held at the Natural History Museum, transferred along with the specimens in 1911. The format is very similar to [this page] apart from an additional column marked 'By order of'. … The initials in the returned column are probably: 'WL' = William Lonsdale who was Librarian (1829-1842) 'CH' = Charles Humphreys, clerk (1838-1839)".
