Emma recorded in her diary for 11 June 1881: "pretty morning calm went on Lake & after dinner".

This was the last holiday Darwin ever went on.

My dear George

I hope you will be able to come next week ─ Hen. & Leo will be here, & I hope William. Penrith is called 16 miles & Troutbeck is called 10 ─ both more than the reality. The drive is beautiful.
