Extract from a letter of Wm to Sara w. she sent me ─

The walk to Bex was very beautiful, partly through chestnut groves, of which I am so fond; & the evening lights made every thing look so lovely.

My guide was a very nice fellow & we talked about Cannes & the Republic of Turin ─ he apparently read his newspapers very carefully

This is a grand wild spot. The Hotel is on a bleak promontory of rock overlooking the glacier which winds below one; far below one sees on the opposite side of the Rhone valley the Semplon road winding up the hills. I find something fascinating about the stillness & desolation & grand scale of the mountains & glaciers —

I went to see Tyndall & sat

there 1/2 an hr & found him very pleasant. I go to lunch tomorrow at 12.30 ─
