Emma recorded in her diary on 13 June that Catherine Thorley came and stayed for four days leaving on 16 June.

Mrs Ev / Mrs E refers to Margaret (Evvy) Evans who was the Darwin's cook and housekeeper. She married Sydney Sales.

My dear George

I want to know how you are going on, & I suppose you are as hot as ever — yesterday we were very cold & had a fire — today just as bright as ever — & this high land makes me feel so well— It is very charming here & feels

quite mountainous. What did you do on the race day —

We have been chiefly occupied in seeing old friends & bedding out plants; which we must water. I am sorry to hear that S. Sales has left every single thing except 3 Bibles to his wife,

not even the mother's nic nacks to her daughter & I am sure they will not be good friends unless Mrs Ev. alters that disposition to some degree — for it really is very hard upon her — every thing left to Mrs E. for her life — of course she cannot leave it to any one but Mabel —

I hope you will go & hear the Reid lecture if at

Cam — I have taken advantage of the absence of sons to invite Miss T(horley) to stay till Sat — under those circes I do not mind, & she enjoys the country heartily— (She comes I see)
