Darwin's letter to William dated by the editors of the Darwin Correspondence as between 14-17 May made the same request "I begin to think it would be far safer to measure pollen dry". (CUL-DAR97.43)

Papa cares very much more about seeing the Rhamnus very much than the Menganthes— it flowers in May & Papa must see a male & female flower off a different bush. It is because there is an American one which is Dimorphic.

He hopes you wont hate him.

He sends these two more packets of red cowslip as he believes they are the last they have not much pollen as they are to be measure dry you can do them when you like.

Dear Wm— Perhaps the boys come on Sat. but it is not known for certain— I don't think we shall let you
