Christian Archibald Herter (1865-1910) was an American physician and pathologist who specialised on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. He met Horace Darwin in Cambridge in 1903 and H. E. Litchfield in Cannes in 1904, if not otherwise. She allowed him to take notes and quotations from Darwin's notes on marriage. CUCNY-HerterBox1[.3]

Dear Dr Herter

I am so glad you like the photograph & that it made its journey safely.

I wish you could have seen my brother, as I think

you would have liked him. I'm sorry to say his experience in [cronie] doesn't encourage me. He is not so miserable at the time, but it makes him so dyspeptic

afterwards, & I don't feel as if I could well risk that. However perhaps I shall get more courage. It is a most excellent photo of you & Christine in the boat. How happy they must all be with their

animals & the free life. I shd ever so much like to join in I suppose you can't go there for Xmas holiday. Its too cold. But I hope you will try & keep from the sin of over working.
