"Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater, Isle of Wight. A house owned by Julia Margaret Cameron. 1868 CD and Family stayed there in summer. CD was photographed. (Paul van Helvert & John van Wyhe, Darwin: A Companion, 2021.) The family was there from 17 July to 20 August 1868. Emma Darwin recorded in her diary Captain Speedy's visit as on 20 July 1868.

Dear George –

Papa wants me to thank you very very much for your Italian translation which is most excellent – every word as clear as daylight & every word most interesting to him. He says it is out & out better than any of Camilla's [Ludwig] translations & he is extremely obliged to you. About SW's letter - Papa has forwarded

Sw's letter to G.R. Stephenson Esq Yacht Club Ryde – but I don't guess it will reach – now another – nay, two more letters have come – one from his aunt asking us to forward if we know his address. We are sending to Yarmouth today & I daresay we shall find out – but what is the man about?

We don't know Wm's address either – Is anything gone

wrong – has he quarrelled with his family? When we kno we'll send u G R.S.'s address tho I don't see that that makes it certain of catching Sw. for his family must kno he was going there.

Today – Mr Stable has 3 stall so when you come we shall be able have a horse from Sthampton or Ryde – Also there is just one bedroom for u the rest of the boys will have to lodge out. We are
