Modesty
On Meta Gaskell's repeating Sara Sedgwick's remarks to the effect (I think) that it made her happy only to be in the room with him, he said in a tone of almost pain or disgust - Bless the people, they are all mad. But in the evening he reconciled himself to it by the supposition that it was becos they s he kept himself so close that they made such a fuss.
