My dear Sir,

Having seen your note in Nature I venture to send you a few letters which I received from your Father at various times — I am sorry I did not keep more, particularly one very characteristic one which I had from him when you –(or one of your brothers) were dangerously
ill

[135v]

with scarlet fever?

I send the letters just as they are. You will see that some of them refer to a correspondence between my father and your's about some crossing experiments and therefore, to make the connection more clear, I have inserted one or two of my father's replies. The subject is alluded to in Animals & Plants.

— I think it very probable that such men as Paul, & Rivière may have letters

[135b]

of similar character shall I insert your request in G.C.?

Please to return the letters at your convenience as I value them highly — you will judge whether they are likely to be suitable for your purpose — if so and you require any explanation that I can give I shall be delighted to give it

[135c]

faithfully yrs

Maxwell T. Masters.
