RECORD: Robertson, Jas [John?]. 1880.07.12. [On John Scott's death]. CUL-DAR198.172. Edited by John van Wyhe (Darwin Online, http://darwin-online.org.uk/)

REVISION HISTORY: Transcribed by Christine Chua and edited by John van Wyhe 4.2021. RN1

NOTE: George King wrote to Darwin on 28 September 1880 informing him of John Scott's death and that Scott had the intention of giving to Darwin "two curious specimens of imperfectly developed young pigs" and if he found any notes concerning the pigs he would send them to Darwin. Darwin replied that he was grieved to hear of Scott's death and that he had helped Scott's family with "an introduction to a neighbouring clergyman" (CUL-DAR169.21; CUL-DAR249.89).

Darwin had on three occasions financially supported John Scott's foray into India to seek employment.

[J Scotts death]

12 July 1880

My dear Sir,

The family of the late John Scott's sister seem to be most confused in their charge of documents for they did not give me your letter when they got it. They told me what they had heard from your father and when I went along & among the things asked to see his letter, it cd not be found & only the day after was yours sent me –last week. You will thus understand my delay in answering it –I shall be very glad to do as your father wishes & suggests, especially after his opinion of the man & probable value of what he has left.

He brought with him very little in the way of specimens –but some MSS. I hope to get them & have them looked into. It may turn out he has some interests of value in Science in Calcutta left behind him.

With kind regards believe me

Very truly yrs

Jas Robertson
