This letter was probably written in reply to the letter from Ferdinand Maria Malven 12 February [1869], in Correspondence vol. 17, p. 74, which was on the occassion of Darwin's sixtieth birthday. Malven was Librarian to the Austrian Imperial and Royal Board of Trade. This item was later published in Correspondence vol. 30 with the editorial note "In his letter, Malven had written that he had proposed the celebration of CD's birthday to the editor of the Neue Freie Presse, a Viennese daily paper, and that CD's name was as honoured in Germany as that of Alexander von Humboldt. The article on CD's birthday was published in Neue Freie Press, 12 February 1869, pp. 1–2. This extract from CD's letter was published in a later short note, with the comment that it gave the lie to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's famous dictum, 'Nur die Lumpe sind bescheiden' (Only nobodies are modest). Translation by John van Wyhe:
"Since my boyhood I honoured the name of Humboldt and it was his works which awoke in me the desire to see and examine tropical countries. Therefore I see it as a great honour to have my name connected with that of this leader of science. But I am not so weak as to assume that my name could ever be set in the same class with his."

(Ein Brief Darwin's.) Ein hiesiger Verehrer des berühmten Naturforschers hat diesem unseren Artikel "Zu Darwin's Geburtstag" überschickt und in dem begleitenden Briefe gesagt, daß überall in Deutschland die Anerkennung und Verehrung für Darwin fast ebenso groß sei, wie für unseren Alexander v. Humboldt. Darauf hat Sir Charles Darwin mit einem eben so liebenswürdigen als bescheidenen Briefe geantwortet, worin er über Humboldt's Einfluß auf seine eigene Thätigkeit sich in folgender Weise ausspricht: "Seit meiner Knabenzeit verehrte ich den Namen Humboldt's, und seine Werke waren es, welche den Wunsch in mir erweckten, tropische Länder zu sehen und zu prüfen; daher betrachte ich es als eine sehr große Ehre, daß mein Name in Verbindung mit jenem dieses Führers der Wissenschaft genannt werden sollte, aber ich bin nicht so schwach, um anzunehmen, daß mein Name jemals in dieselbe Classe mit seinem gesetzt werden könnte." Das ist allerdings wieder eine starke Widerlegung der Goethe'schen Worte: "Nut die Lumpe sind bescheiden!"
