This is a translation of part of Darwin's letter to Hermann Settegast 29 September 1870. Darwin's letter was printed in and advtisement for the fourth edition of Settegast, 1868. Die Thierzucht, by the publisher, Wilhelm Gottlieb Korn. See the full letter with important notes in Correspondence vol. 18. Darwin's lightly annotated copy of Die Thierzucht is in the Darwin Library-Down. See Marginalia 1: 754. Darwin cited Settegast in Variation 2d ed., 2: 331 n. 41: "Settegast ('Die Thierzucht,' 1868, p. 39) says that white or white-spotted sheep suffer like pigs, or even die from eating buckwheat; whilst black or dark-woolled individuals are not in the least affected."

In einem Briefe Darwin's heisst es: "Zur grossen Genugthuung gereicht es mir, in dem Verfasser, der lange Jahre mit philosophischem Geiste über hausthierzucht nachgedacht hat und dem darin das competenteste Urtheil zusteht, einen Mann zu finden, der im grossen ganzen mit meinen Ansichten übereinstimmt."
