It was from here [Down House] that I received his autograph, some eight months before his death. It was sent off at once in response to my application, being written in black ink upon half a sheet of notepaper, doubtless torn from some disposed-of letter. At the head of the sheet is written:—
Charles Darwin,
Down, Kent,
Augt. 16th, 1881.
Lower down, about the centre, are the words:—
"With Mr. D's compliments."
