[unrecorded letter]
An interesting letter in the hand of Darwin's wife, who, owing to the ill-health from which her husband suffered during the latter years of his life, was frequently obliged to act as his secretary; seeking for information concerning the habits of common greyhounds and describing his dog "Bran"—"one of my sons…heard some boys ask whether he was a dog or a monkey."
1033 DARWIN (CHARLES).
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED.
2 pp., 8vo. Down. 14th October, N.Y. £1 12s 6d
[To M. A. T. Whitby 14 October [1847]]
"I am extremely much obliged by your kindness in sending me so capital a suite of male and female specimens. I am surprised at their not being a marked difference in the size of their wings: what you tell me of the wings of the female being smaller than those of the male, in their early growth is quite new to me. I hope to get a friend to enquire how these facts are with the species in India." Etc.
