65 DARWIN (CHARLES, 1809-1882). Naturalist and Author
Autograph Letter Signed to Henry Milne-Edwards, the naturalist. 2 1/2 pages, 4to. Farnborough Down, 18th November, 1847.
An interesting letter on the Balanus, a species of Cirriped, belonging to the Crustacea.
"... Mr. Goodsir has figured in Eding. New Phil. Journal, July, 1843 . . . what he considers, certainly quite erroneously, the male of the Balanus: I have found 5 individuals of this Lconoea like strange creatures within the sack (or so called mantle) of the Balanus elongatus of the British seas. Mr. Goodsir, also figures, what he considers a new genus of isopodous crust, as parasitic on his male Balanus. I have found the same, but I believe it is the Larva form of the Leoncea. I have this imagined larva form of the Leonoea: I have this imagined larva in every stage of development and well preserved and thousands of individuals of them. In fact the Leonoea is a great sack full of these little crustaceous larvae, which in their early state exist as curious kidney-shaped, papillose bodies." &c.
