44 DARWIN, CHARLES. Naturalist

A.L.s. 1 p., 12mo; Beckenham, 6 Jan., no year, ca. 1875; to his druggist, asking about the composition of a spermaceti ointment which he has been buying for some years. (Olsen)

He wants to know about the ointment because I blackened some young shoots of plants with this ointment mixed with Lampblack & it produced an extraordinary effect on the shoots, which I think cannot be accounted for merely by the exclusion of light.
