134 DARWIN, CHARLES English zoologist

[To Richard Owen [1839-April 1840] This auction record is also the only one known to the editors of the Correspondence. The following letters' recipient is uncertain because it is due to an annotation on the remaining last sheet. The fact that it appeared at acution with another Darwin letter to Owen would seem to add some probability that it was indeed written to Owen.]

A.L.S. "C. Darwin," five lines on a narrow 8vo sheet, 12 Upper Lowe St., Sunday (1838). To Owen (Dr. RICHARD OWEN), "I have been delighted with your discussion in this sheet—I have made a couple of pencil marks—Pray be kind enough to return these revises to the printer & urge him to send you the remaining ones. Smith & Elder are groaning about the delay..." Slightly worn and soiled, but very good. (100.00)

135 DARWIN, CHARLES

[To Richard Owen, [November 1847-51] 'I had not heard before'(inserted in another hand) "before of Whewell having scolded you; I am rather glad of it, as it shows that this typical Don feels the pressure from without.—" See the comments this letter in Correspondence vol. 4.]

Concluding small 8vo page of an A.L.S. "C. Darwin," to Dr. RICHARD OWEN, "...I had not heard before of Whench having scolded you; I am rather glad of it...What a grand number of novelties Hooker no doubt will bring home..."

Slightly worn and soiled, but very good. (75.00)

Sold for: USD 110
