Equal-styled no' 27. (p. g) (pollen sent to William1) produced spont. many pods 3 of which include one of 17 seed but was sterile when art. self-fert. with own pollen with Both Cowslip-pollen
average 25.3 max. 37.
Equal styled 37 p. g produced spont. very many fine pod; & five of them contained average of 44.8; max 57 art. self-fert with own pollen rather sterile.. (1) By omitting 2 bad pods, average form of 6 pods with both short-styled pollens form cowslip 28.5, max. 49
Equal-styled 44 (p. g) not covered. spont. fert, average of 9 pods (2) 45.2 max 58.
Almost equal-styled (p. f) 28 six selected spont fert gave average of 33.9 with max. 38, but during 1866 pistil (with rough stigma of proper shape stood) stood far above anthers — In 1865 6 produced (3) enormous number of splendid pods, six selected of which contained average of 34.3 seed, & max.m of 38 & flowers highly & highly fertile when art self-fert.— Four pods by pollen of Both cowslips. gave average of 30.2.
Almost equal-styled 40 p. f In same state during both years. stigma rough, but not do much depressed as in true long-styled. (Nothing remarkable) But subsequently threw up tress with stigma clear above anthers. Abut as fertile not when self- & crossed with cowslip
Short-styled (p. h) .41. stamen in position as in short-styled produced spont during 65 an abundance of pods, ten of which contained average of 35.6 seed with max. 54. In 1866, has now become very long styled with stigma rough & depressed. (4) — ten pod. spont, produced contained 35.1 with max of 47.— Eight fl. legitimately fert. by pollen of short-styled cowslip yielded 6 capsules with average of 53.0 seed with max of 67.— Seven pods by illegit. fert. by pollen of long-styled cowslip gave average of 24.4 with max. 32.
Short-styled p 39. (p. h) (stamen as in 41) retained same form both years — pistil longer than in the short-styled stigma smooth & in shape like inverted cone, so abnormal.— Produced in 1865 many finish (5) Pods; but five gave average of only 15.6 with max. of 17. : in 1866 the spont, produced pods, 10 in number, gave average of 22.1 with max. of 30.
Eight flowers fertilised in 1866 by pollen of short-styled cowslip (which if plant had become long-styled wd have been legitimate union) gave only 2 pods with 18 & 23 seeds.
Eight flowers fert. in 1866 by pollen of long-styled cowslip, (which if plant had become long-styled wd be illegitimate union) gave 6 pods with average of 24.7 & max. of 34.
Eight flowers fert in 1865. by like last by pollen of long-styled cowslip, gave 6 pods with average of 25.1. with max of 42.
{Or we may say that during both years 16 fl were fert. by pollen of long-styled Cowslip & gave 12 pods with average of 24.9 & max of 42.
Eight flowers were fert by pollen of long-styled red cowslip & gave only 3 poor pods, with 3, 2, & 9' pods seeds !!

(From these observe we thus see how much more greatly these 5 fl. differ in fertility in 2 instances before 'made a real great difference in the length of the pistil during successive yrs on the one plant made no difference in the number of seed produced. Some Most nearly all those of the plants owing to the p[illeg] the male organ if the short-style & the female organ of the long-sty when spontaneous self-fertilised produced a suprsg no of Capsule, containing a surprising number of good seed. From a legitimate un of some cowslips or polyanthus, I have now obtain a higher average than 41 seeds, but with 2 of equal-styled plant the average rose to 44 & 45.
Fertility same with pistil of extremely different lengths.
These 2 plants yield rath poor seed when legit fert by pollen from a long-styled cowslip— On other hand, one another plant which was somewhat less though still highly self-fertile, (Vi) with from average of 35.6 seed) gave the when fert by pollen of long-styled gave the astounding average of 55' with max of 67. average.— This latter case shows that the high fertility is not caused by any especial constant adaptation of the male & female organs in this equal-styled plant, but depends rather on an innate variation in the power of reproduction, & is due to reversion to some former condition.— Lastly the fine plant is almost exactly in intermediate condition between a long- & short-style & yield when spont. self-fert. a low average.—
Considering all the equal & short sty plant & on in above 41 self-fertilised capsules (insects being excluded) produce an average of 34. seeds, the same number as the parent plant in Edinburgh yielded. But it is rather singular 20 flowers fertilised by pollen from the same plant produced only 10 capsules containing the much lower average of 26.7 seed. This difference can I think only be accounted for by the spontaneously self-fertilise plants always receiving without any injurious effects from [illeg] pollen at the exactly proper period when the stigma was best fitted for impregnation.
(As bearing on inheritance, a few remarks nay be added on the production of the earlier equal-styled plant. I raised from some of my equal-styled plants, spont self-ferts, 72 seedlings.
