Conclusions 1865 Cowslip-Polyanthus Unions

As standard 12 pods of long- & short sty. plants growing naturally in border & no doubt Het. fert. yielded average of 38.7 seed.

As standard 3 short-styled plants were Het. Hom. fert, & produced p 8/18 pods. with 75 seed average of 9.3 seed, of which many poor

Three long-sty. plant (Nos 1, 3. & 5) were Hom. fert. & produced 22/36 pods with (421 seed) with average of 19.1 seed; but if two poor pods with less than 10 seed be excluded (seed reduced to 404) & average rises to 20.2 seed.

(Now for Homomorphic seedlings.)

N.B. the seed were finer from the Het. plants than from the Hom. plants.

Three long-styled Hom, plants were had 36 fl. Hom. fert & yielded only 12/36 pods, which 12 pods contained 255 seeds which gives an average of 21.2; but if one poor pod with 5 seeds be excluded, the average rises to 22.7. Hence we see that though the number of flowers which set pods in these Hom, seedlings compared with common plant is reduced in proportion of 12/36 to 22/36 the average number of seed is slightly increased. as 22.7 to 20.2.

Three Hom. plants (number 2, 4, & 6) viz a short-st. & 2 Long-st. all descended from short-st (the previous long-st are descended from long-st) had 36 flowers hom. fertilized, & produced not one pod!

Of long st. common C. 8 flowers were hom. fert. by pollen of long-st hom. plant & produced 4 pods, with average of only 8.0 seed so that apparently the pollen of the hom. plants is very poor, for these pods ought to have yielded about 20 seeds — 8 short-st. C. flowers were hom. fert. in same manner & produced not one pod. Same inference may be drawn.
