Miss Ludwig is likely Louisa Ludwig (1839-1915) who took over from her sister Camilla (1838-1912) as governess at Down House from September 1861.

Oxlips

Miss Ludwig gathered at Hartfield in Spring of 1862 from about 3 or 4 plants, the above series of long-styled Oxlips, which have stamens of same length, but of which pistils all with single stigma vary from full length to "mid-styled"

I have seen both forms with oxlips & in Grt. wood whence by seed were gathered. There was variability on same plant; just as in one of no. 3 seedlings
