Chinese Primrose

March 5 — Examined the pistil of long-styled. Either 8 or 9 (for two were close together) bundles of spiral vessels in style. — In ovarium I am almost certain only 5; do not others form the central ovule-bearing column.—

March 5' Parslow has most carefully examined Mr Fry's Primroses.

30 Pin-heads (but then these may include some as (as Mr Horwoods) did "Duck's seedlings" did) Long-styled; all these are common; & are not have nothing to do, with the mid-styled strain

18 short-styled

15 mid-styled. The Gardener said that these were a distinct strain; & they some were mottled like "Horwoods seedlings, showing that they are an artificial race.

Taking whole 65 pl plants 30 were long-styled & 35 short-styled; but then this not fair, because I believe suspect the "mid-styled" (which are here ranked amongst the 35 short-styled) are heredity & apt to come all same form. —

The Gardener says of the ordinary Chinese Primrose the long-styled are best seeders; but Parslow does not know whether he referred to the mid-styled also.—
