Jun 24' 64 Echium vulgare – H. Muller says nothing
Female flowers smaller corolla shorter pistil & shorter stamens ─ the latter not attached higher ─
In anthers some pollen minute notched grains, which do not swell in water
Imperfect pollen yellow─ F. collected flowers from separate plants. All these were early flowers.
6 with imperfect anthers varying in development
5 with perfect anther
2 in intermediate condition ─ These latter had 1, 2, or 3 tall anthers with proper pollen ─ one anther had half green & half yellowish green pretty good pollen ─ What I have called above pollen is truly incoherent minute cells. ─ ─ /over
[A14v]
Economy of pollen ─ no trace of Dimorphism ─
July 2d Frank collected some more specimens from another locality
8 with short, imperfect stamens ─
11 with perfect long stamens.─
Short anthers & intermediate condition} 8 [+] 6 [+] 2 [=] 16 11 [+] 5 [=] 16 how odd! Vaucher or Lecoq [3 words taped over]
I planted last year before last in garden in good soil seed from a short long-stamened plant & raised 23 plants; of these 1 alone had same imperfect anthers & was in an intermediate condition but leaning to perfect side: the other 22 had good anthers, but in 2 or 3 plants the stamens were rather short!! Soil must have some effect.─ I do not believe from case of Thyme, that long-stamen can be inherited.─
