[A22]

On new cut on a bank of exactly same character & aspect I marked a male Female & Herm.

Thyme plant & waited till in seed & then gathered. & cut off all the flower heads separately. When dried the heap of Heads looked nearly equal. But there were 160 Female Heads & 200 Hermaphrodite Heads; & the latter struck me as smaller.

May 29 62. I observe in garden thyme, the Herm. flowers are much larger than the female. This opposed to lac[k] of compensation — it is rather law of correlation, for doubling &c shows close relation of stamens & petals & here with rudimentary stamens, corolla much reduced in size.—
