[A23]

Aug. 4th 1862 Scabiosa arvensis

I find many plants (all fl. on same plant the same as far as I see); but not so much as half, with rudimentary anther; these are variable, generally are seated at bottom of corolla with no vestige of pollen; sometimes with longer filament so that another just frees itself & lies transversely at mouth of flower when mature; these latter contain a very little pollen, but apparently the anther never open never dehisces ; filament of stem not nearly so large long as in purple flowers, & which is very remarkable the pollen-grains are not nearly so large & [illeg] as in purple anther; the anther itself about 1/2 as large as in purple.—

Pistil apparently in their [feminine] flowers longer with the stigma more bi labiate or not so cup-formed??

are these fertile? Rudimentary dimorphism.—

[A23v]

Aug 6' Quite a small proportion, I find, have the rudimentary anthers.—

Marked one of them with single string & one with double string with anther. on terrace about 10 yd from end under open field—

[A24]

Aug 5 – 1862 Scabiosa atro purpurea & old sweet var of do.— One single head of latter was in aborted state of S. arvensis. The stigmas of these latter were purple united of white & perhaps sterile
