[A31]

May 2d 1863 Euonymus Celastreæ

I gathered twigs off about 18 trees & half had long & rather pert stigma with very short stamens, apparently good, but containing no pollen. The other half had long stamens, but with good pollen, (but surprisingly little considering only 4 stamens). & very short pistil: ♂ fl this latter point rather variable for 2 bushes had large pistil. Ovules in both forms of equal size, so I suppose case like Thyme. Trees frequent by multitude of flies, & some Hymenoptera, but no Bees, making exudation from fleshy disk.

many flies were like House-flies with enlarged proboscis—

[A31v]

(a) Plenty of seed

(B) very moderate number of seed

(c) not one seed on 3 Bushes

(D) very few seed 2 or 3 about 2 dozen in whole Bush

Sept. 2d 1864. Henrietta examined trees marked, on other side

A. Female 9 seed

B not one seed on all 3 plants

C not one seed

D about 20 seeds

E 3 seeds & these very imperfect, producing each only one instead of 3 seeds each.—

In Hedge going N.W. another Bush of same — none in Hedge to Big Wood within 40 yd — I have not looked elsewhere

[A32]

June 4th Marked some Bushes — Coming out of Hanggrove by gap, where Cephalanthera grows, turning to left 45 yd (a) Bush solitary with long pistil single string. Some Plenty of some seed

Turning to right from gap 23 yards, Female bush with some seed (B)

A long pistil (& short aborted stamens single string.—

— 28 yds further from last bush a large male bush

B with (c) short pistil no seed double string (on each side B of these bushes about 38d off bushes on both sides of same nature no seed not marked)

C. (D) B 15 yards from last, bush with long fertile stamen but with pistil no seed not short treble string.

D. 5 yards further on bush (rather far in back) long pistil single string. (E) covered with seed

E 32 yd further bush like that with treble string, but has only single string as I had no more.— (E) not one seed (a b few seed.— about 2 dozen

By gap going to Big Wood large Bush, (solitary I think) with long pistil & aborted stamens. This bore seed. Make 6 [Plants]

[A32v]

Results July 20 63. — I marked 5 bushes with long pistil & short stamens with no pollen & these bore plenty of fruit; though in various quantities. It is surprising that some bore a good many though not growing very near tree with fertile stamens.

Three trees with long stamens having pollen & short pistil did not bear a single berry & yet stood pretty near other trees.

One tree with do stamens & rather long pistil did not bear one berry another tree like last, had only about 2 dozen on whole tree.—

(I could introduce subject after discussing cases like Thyme.)
