Ash Tree. April 20. 1863 see few notes in paper on Trees

F = female, branches of stigmas with numerous small & evidently abortive anther; possibly a few may open. Kegs.

M = Male, with a stigma at end of most branch of flowers & apparently after abortion — no kegs to be seen.

H = Hermaphrodite with plenty of stigma & good anther _ Kegs on.—

Lane to Luxted

When male branch is put in water, a heap of incoherent pollen is dipped; & when branch struck a cloud comes away.

Pollen dry 7/7000 in diameter

— wet 9/7000 do.

July 7 1863. It is clear male Trees produce no seed. There is no clear difference in number produced by Hermaphrodite or Females. It is odd that supposed Herm. (A) produced no seed: is it hermaphrodite or male?? Has it may pistils?

The male & female flowers, especially latter, from great development of parts has a different & more tufted appearance than the Hermaphrodite.

Some of the male-trees have a good many pistil; others have more or hardly any: The pistils readily fall off.— In the ovarium of the fewer ovules may be plainly seen, but very minute compared with ovules of Female-trees—

(What a gradation!!!)

In the Female tree; most of stamens easily drop off; have no line of dehiscence & consist internally of watery pulp.—

In Female flowers, the degree of abortion of stamen very much; & in one group I fd. after search a couple of anthers not very large, with good deal of pollen, which were compared m. & compared with pollen from male flowers seemed quite good.

Hence I shall have to fill some other observation into relative fertility & size of the corolla in centre other [illeg] plant, in
