Oxalis speciosa

April 26 1867. Counted all the plants: they proved 33 long-styled, 26 short-styled & only 2 mid-styled — They were produced by long-styled x short-styled & reciprocally.— Many illegitimate seeds were raised produced from these 2 forms (or from long-styled alone???) by own-form pollen, & though I do not think so, yet as I was ill at the time of sowing, it is possible that the self-fertilised seed, were sown at same time, & this wd account for vast number, in accordance with analogy of Lythrum of long & short-styled plants — It thus is not explanation in case is analogous. /over

[B20v]

None of the plants were as far as I tried at also sterile; & thus makes me much doubt whether any are illegitimate plants & I feel sure if they such illegitimate seed had been sown they wd have been so Labelled.—
