Lythrum

July 21. 1866. One of the last lot of hom. long styled seedling from long-styled from potatoe field had its pollen from longer stamens examined. It appeared good but contained a great many shrivelled & unequal sized grains.

(Another plant has most of anther contabescent: one fl. examined had all anthers except 2, unopened, brown & tough ─ containing few angular shrivelled grains.

The 2 anthers white in appearance were good & which had opened dehisced had 2/3 of grains small & imperfect.—

(another Two other plants with only 3 flowers open no anther contabescent

(Short-styled Illegitimate Plant nor. 31. pollen of longer & shorter stamens perfectly good hardly any shrivelled grains.)

(no 33. Long-styled a moderate number of minute shrivelled grains in pollen of both stamens)

(no 30 Long-sty. Hardly any bad grains in either anthers, & the few that did not swell in water not minute & shrivelled.—

(No 27 Short-sty — pollen of both sets perfectly good.

Examine pollen of natural Plant next year, not oldest plant of all.
