May 6th 1864 — angustifolia
Pulmonaria I. of Wight in kitchen garden compared 3 flowers of both kinds long-sty largest corolla (mem Wm)
Long short-stamen ie short-styled Filaments longer, anther in bud about one third longer; pollen as might be expected more abundant yet abundant in short long stamen of long-styled Pollen gr conspicuously larger with long stamens & fewer bad grains than in short sty stamen— style besides much greater length is thinner. Stigma sometimes bi-lobed & sometimes not in both forms long-styled. Variable in relative size & roughness.—
Short-styled rather have more larger pollen grains according to William than long-styled— I can see this plainly /over
[51v]
May 14th I now find that length of anther is very variable — so is thickness of style.— Filament longest in short-styled.— Even in same flower in one case I found much difference in size of all some of the anthers
