[15]

Pulmonaria angustifolia March 19 1877

Distance from middle of anther to middle of pistil stigma in short-styled is to ditto in long-styled as 100 to 81

(Average of 4 observations on long-styled 0 x 3 on short)

N.B In one long-styled the above distance was as great as any of the short-styled

Length of anther of short styled to ditto long-styled as 100 100 to 83.6 ─

(Average of 4 observations in long styled & 3 on short)

[16]

Pulmonaria angustifolia March 29 1877

Anthers of short styled are to anthers of long as 100 to 90.6 in length (seven of each measure)

Long styled anthers vary from 63 to 80 divisions of micron

Short styled vary to 80 to 70

(Keep) (William certainly nearly upright)

[Slip of paper pasted on:] Pulmonaria angustifolia

Position of flowers horizontal on depending (Stand nearly upright)

[17]

Pulmonaria angustifolia Mar 29 77

Fresh pollen examined in water

Diameter of short-styled as to that of long-styled pollen as 100 to 91

{Average of 25 short & 20 long styled}

Long styled pollen varies from 13 to 11.5 micrometer divisions

Short styled ─ 15 to 13

There are a considerable number of bad grains in both forms; the sample which clearly had most bad grains certainly was from the short stamens of a long styled ─ But another sample was not strikingly different from the short-styled pollen. On the whole there is probably certainly a slight difference. Three sides of each kind of pollen examined. Each side composed of pollen from several anthers.

The corolla of the long styled has a distinct but slight bulge in it [sketch]

The distance from middle of stigma to middle of anther in long styled is to ditto short styled as 100 to 69

(average of 7 measurements of each form)

This distance varies in the long styled from 155 to 112

divisions of microm, & in the short styled from 119 to 65─

Pistil (measured fr top of ovary to top of stigma) is in the long styled is to ditto short as 100 to 55.8

(Ten measurements of each)
